The escapers at our forever favourite town in the Westfjords – Holmavik (no idea why, though).
for our small escape
we took the four roommates
and headed towards
good, better, west
or in other words
the Westfjords
one more time
•
the plan was to go
to places we have
not yet been
to color another road
we’ve never driven before
Rauðisandur, the red beach
pitch a tent with the sunset
shaken by the wind in the night
wake up to sunshine
perfect for a swim
in the 10°C ocean
and Látrabjarg, the bird cliff
almost blew us away
the views and the smell
were simply breathtaking
•
we had our one mandatory salmon
straight from/in the Westfjords
and embarked on a mission
to find a hot pool
for Sara’s birthday at midnight
we chose to cross an F road
F66 over the fjords
in our Nissan Qashqai
that was only maybe
meant for this road
we met one abandoned car
parked in the middle of the road
and crossed 27 rivers
because her birthday
was the next day
•
we found a pool in a greenhouse
had the vegan chocolate cake
waiting patiently for two days
in the glovebox of the car
saw horses escape
the cutest greenhouse cat
sang a birthday song
blew out candles
and had some wine
until 2 AM
and then pitched a tent
•
the next day
we decided to risk it
and drove on fumes
60 km back to the gas station
to take a detour out of the fjords
and into the Highlands
driving down the cloud
that covered F35
to visit the Hveravellir area
and spend the night
at home, sweet home (tent)
Kerlingarfjöll, freezing
•
that is how I said goodbye
to my favourite parts
of this island
what follows
is a lot of crying
and a summary
of my travel home
•
Thursday was the most
beautiful summer day
with 20°C until the evening
when we went for an ice cream
sOOs
headed home in the sunset
to spend the evening
with all the good people
who make Mikla a home
a little bit of books
a cake and candles
for both mine & Sara’s birthday
a long Gartic Phone
until the morning arrived
when it was time to leave
and let the tears flow
•
the sunrise was beautiful
but I couldn’t see it well
the car was so dirty
and the tears were plenty
we could see the volcano
spilling over from Reykjavik
and I saw it from above
from the plane
there wasn’t a cloud in the sky
it was Iceland’s way
to say thank you

This is not a goodbye, it’s a see you soon.
