week twenty one

I love-love-love this place! Also at 00:39 AM.

the Highlands camp ends

life goes on

and we never stop

to take a breath

a nap if we’re lucky

and the countdown begins

but first, sushi

and second, pancakes

essentials missed most

outside civilization

a nap later

the summer solstice

plus two free days

equals a rental car

with the realization

we’ve been overpaying for months

at 18 PM on a Sunday

we embark on a mission

to see the midnight sun

somewhere in the North

planned just enough

that on the crossroad

towards the Westfjords

we head West

because it’s a crime

to leave Iceland without visiting

my favourite part

keep on driving at 1 AM

for a CHURCH and

SHEEP ON THE ROAD

to find a hot pool

within nature

without people

with a view

on the midsummer sun’s

sunset & sunrise

are clearly visible

on the East coast

of the Westfjords

at the end of

the 100 km gravel road

two weeks of privacy

in our canyon hot pool

were exceeded a day later

when we found

the pool of our dreams

on the other side

of one of Iceland’s 464 airports

with one flight every Friday

who knew floating food

at 3 AM tastes so good

thank you for this experience ❤️

2 days after coming back

from the one place

I needed them the most

I bought hiking boots

my old loyal pair

that conquered volcanoes

glaciers and Reykjavik

will get an environmentally friendly

Norse funeral (burning boOat)

they’ll be brought

to our good friend, SORPA

we spent a day at Family Aid

work like the devil’s behind you

kept us fishing

the cod with a pan from the box

but El Diablo allowed us

to join the rest of the country

at the vaccination factory

we only got one shot

and started the camp

on the same evening

imagine a house

full of Italian-speakers

and all three camp leaders

down with a fever

none of us had had

in a very long time

barely hanging on

for the next few days

but always ready

to meet motherpuffins

revisit our bird-poop-island

and have an intercultural dinner

of Italian food, tears,

olives, and lángos

before saying goodbye

to our dearest friends

with a jar of sand

and hugs that last forever

after letting you go

nothing will ever be the same

and chapter four begins

Pancake morning! And the difference between mine and Sara’s coffee: I drink coffee with milk, she drinks milk with coffee.
An odd time when only 4 people were living in our lovely house in Reykjavik.
The squad, the myth, the legends.
Towards the Westfjords! At 10:05 PM.
00:30 AM.
The most beautiful waterfalls don’t have a name (00:49 AM).
Walking over an airport at 01:25 AM.
This is officially the best hot pool we have been able to find in this country.
View from the rocks next to the pool – 02:17 AM.
02:31 AM.
Sunrise view from the pool at 02:35 AM.
Crossing the airport at 04:17 AM.
Sometimes the road just ends. At 04:59 AM we started to drive back towards Reykjavik from the furthest point you can drive to on the East coast of the Westfjords. We made it home by 10 AM.
Sometimes we have strolls on glaciers.
The time has come – natural sights have tourists for scale.
The deadly black beach was not that deadly this time.
Long time no see: a cruise ship (from Norway). Please be the first and last one!
The bird poop island (Videy!) offered us hot chocolate, Icelandic pancakes(?) and a front-row view on the cruise ship!
My toothbrush and the table were sacrificed for a very good cause, and the result was amazing!
Our lovely camp crew helped to clean up a beach that will never be clean.. another example of plastic soil!
We also visited the volcano for the 5th time, but I didn’t take any pictures.. thank you Sara! This photo sums up the current volcano situation very well.
We have viewed the volcano from all of the hills in this picture.. all of them are surrounded by fresh lava fields now. That’s about all you see there these days – lava fields.
We finished the week with a session of midnight tears & snacks.
