week nineteen

This is the most beautiful place in Iceland – Hveradalir geothermal area.

less than 24 hours

after returning

from the last adventure

a new one awaited

but first, laundry

and second, brunch

with all the lovely people

who are now across Iceland

and one even beyond

Reykjavik had another rare day

of everchanging weather

which we enjoyed

with the last ice cream

of the foreseeable future

picked up 6 volunteers

of the first full camp

of this year

sadly not with a super jeep

but a minivan and trailer

and headed towards nothing

in the uninhabited

central Highlands of Iceland

the wildest camp

started in the wildest possible way

halfway up the 2-hour gravel road

our trailer with luggage

lost it’s back side

and half of the luggage

landed somewhere on road F347

no one noticed, until we arrived

at our new home, in Kerlingarfjöll

my dear co-camp leader

joined the driver in a super jeep

to find the bag of pastries

and other valuables

everything was found

dropped off in a different place

with the package of seaweed

the first to fall

and a jar of truffle mayo

the hardest to find

after the reunion

we settled in our new home

for the next two weeks

a hut in a valley

with ice cold running water

electricity that can’t handle

the stove and heater on

at the same time

a view of the river, mountains

and for the first few days

the French film crew

apparently men’s perfume

needs a commercial

and quarantine of 20 people

in the most inaccessible

location in Iceland

it’s a different place

after the generator

of their catering truck

was removed from the premises

now we spend our days

cleaning last year’s tourists’

leftovers from the camping area

repairing hiking trails

by creating occasionally successful

drainage channels, placing poles

but mainly fighting

all kinds of weather conditions

as the Slovenian and Brazilian said

they wouldn’t even consider

leaving the house in this weather

we volunteer to suffer

and honestly, it’s lovely

in our free time

we hope for better weather

spend our evenings and nights

in a hot pool inside a canyon

make life plans, and burn our faces

hiking around in sun and snow

we conquered a baby glacier

on boots and cod liver oil

one of the best experiences

of my life so far

thank you for being crazy ❤️

I still don’t own hiking boots

and broke my boot’s lace

on our first day here

everything I lack in equipment

I make up with motivation

we have four weeks to go

Our lovely camp crew!
Some things in life are truly heartbreaking.
Sometimes we work hard.
The view from our window on another snowy day.
My new favourite kind of car. Pick me up with this or don’t!
We have a 10L cow in the fridge.
That one sunny day! We climbed on top of the mountain in the clouds, our baby glacier.
The wind forms the snow on the glacier, and the view is spectacular!
That one sunny day ended with a spectacular sunset, the only one we’ve seen so far.
We did not order this from the kitchen, but cod liver oil is the secret to our success. It was delivered together with amazing cookies and pastries – sugar keeps us going!
What you can see behind the glacier – an approaching snowstorm.
The amazing people who conquered the glacier!
Our lovely volunteer-friends visited us from Reykjavik. They almost gave up on the weather but finally made it to Hveradalir!
One can truly feel on top of the world in this place. Icelandic summer!
